KATHMANDU: President Ramchandra Paudel has reiterated the urgency of holding elections for the House of Representatives (HoR) on scheduled date and sought cooperation from all sides. He made the call today at a ceremony in Shital Niwas marking Constitution Day and National Day.

President Paudel said he lifted Nepal out of a political vacuum by general consensus, as no viable measure existed to form a government from the existing HoR. He added that the interim government had been mandated to hold polls within six months to resolve the crisis.

Describing his decision as a step towards a sustainable political outlet, the President urged all political parties, administrators, officials, intellectuals and citizens to set aside their differences and unite to ensure a successful and timely election.

Emphasising the importance of the Constitution, he said, “This Constitution has made the Nepali citizen sovereign and independent. All castes, religions and communities have been given equal rights. Therefore, it is essential for all to protect this Constitution.”

The President stated that Nepal had embarked on a new path of transformation and that the people’s mandate would further institutionalise democracy. He said that the nation had witnessed unimagined casualties and damage during recent Gen Z protests and paid tribute to the youth who called for a brighter future on September 8.

Looking ahead, he urged measures to curb corruption and anomalies, harness Nepal’s potential, and prioritise good governance, job creation, environmental sustainability and social justice.

Also present were Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav; Prime Minister Sushila Karki; Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut; Speaker Devraj Ghimire; National Assembly Chairman Narayan Prasad Dahal; former Presidents Dr Ram Baran Yadav and Bidya Devi Bhandari; former prime ministers Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Jhala Nath Khanal, Madhav Kumar Nepal and Dr Baburam Bhattarai; and representatives of Gen Z.
