KATHMANDU: Shangri-la Development Bank, which holds a C‑class licence from Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), has started offering the SCT‑UnionPay card service operated by Smart Choice Technologies (SCT), an institution licensed by NRB to operate payment systems.
From October 15, 2025, customers of Shangri-la Development Bank can obtain the SCT‑UnionPay card by visiting the bank. The bank and SCT said the new facility will make digital payments easier, more accessible and safer for customers.
SCT is currently issuing the SCT‑UnionPay card through 23 banks and financial institutions and more than 100 cooperative societies. Using its own card‑switching infrastructure, Smart Switch, SCT issues SCT‑UnionPay and VISA cards and processes card transactions by accepting VISA, RuPay, MasterCard and Discover.
Having provided safe, simple and reliable payment services across Nepal for the past two decades, SCT is Nepal’s first domestic card scheme. In addition to card services, SCT supplies banks and financial institutions with Smart QR, Smart Pay – IBFT (inter‑bank funds transfer) and Smart Banking mobile‑banking services.
