MYAGDI: Farmers in Myagdi district have grown oranges worth Rs 316 million this year, producing 4,515 tonnes from 430 hectares, the Agricultural Development Office said.

Chief of Office Sanjeev Bastola said the fruit was sold at an average rate of Rs 70 per kilogramme and that the total sales value of Rs 316 million was calculated from data collected from orange farms across the district.

Orange production and income in Myagdi declined this year compared with last year, when farmers earned Rs 340 million by selling 4,781 tonnes grown on 425 hectares.

"The climate was favourable for orange production this year. Production was lowered, though there was no disease and no natural disasters this year," Office chief Bastola said. He added that the fall in output was part of a natural cycle.

Rakhu, Marek, Surkemela, Barangja, Bhedabari, Arman, Runma, Bim, Okharbot, Ghatan, Piple, Beg, Dowa, Dosalle, Bhurung, Tatopani, Dana and Narchayang are the major orange-growing villages in Myagdi.
