KATHMANDU: Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) staged a dramatic mid-day rally today amid repeated circuit-breaker triggers.

The benchmark index surged 6.00%, or 162.93 points, to reach 2,875.43 before trading was automatically suspended by the upper circuit breaker at 12:01:37 pm.

Trading faced multiple halts during the session due to strong buying pressure, with initial suspensions occurring earlier in the morning around 11:01 am and 11:21 am and brief resumptions before the final halt at the 6% threshold. Of the stocks traded, 252 advanced, one declined and none remained unchanged, reflecting overwhelming positive sentiment among investors.

As trading was suspended, total turnover stood at Rs 555,963,894.66, with 1,143,767 shares traded through 4,051 transactions. The Sensitive Index climbed 6.03% to 494.10 points, while the Float Index rose 6.10% to 198.62 points.

Several stocks hit the upper circuit limit. Notable gainers included Corporate Development Bank (CORBL), which rose 10% to Rs 1,751.20, and Shiva Shree Hydropower (SSHL), which also gained 10% to Rs 213.40. Himalayan Reinsurance (HRL), City Hotel (CITY) and Nepal Infrastructure Bank (NIFRA) posted nearly 10% increases.

By turnover, Narayani Development Bank (NABBC) led activity with Rs 31.37 million, followed by Shivam Cements (SHIVM) with Rs 28.90 million, SY Panel Nepal (SYPNL) with Rs 28.68 million, Ngadi Group Power (NGPL) with Rs 23.38 million and Radhi Bidyut Company (RADHI) with Rs 22.42 million.

The exchange listed 10% bonus shares of Ghorahi Cement Industry (GCIL) and 6.65% bonus shares of Himalayan Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha (HLBSL). Additional notices concerning eligible trading companies and broker updates were also issued today.

Market participants are awaiting word on whether trading will resume later today or remain halted for the session. Analysts warned that while the sharp rally reflects strong investor optimism, such steep single-day gains — especially after multiple circuit interruptions — are often followed by increased volatility in subsequent sessions.
