KATHMANDU: Yamaha has unveiled the FZ-S FI Hybrid, Nepal’s first hybrid motorcycle, in Kathmandu.
The model creates a new segment in the country’s two-wheeler market and frames hybrid technology as a practical response to rising fuel costs and urban congestion.
The launch took place at Sky Tower in Kamaladi, where Yamaha staged a two-phase programme that first welcomed influencers and content creators and later hosted media, dealers, business partners and members of the riding community. The motorcycle was unveiled jointly by a robot and a human, a theatrical nod to the hybrid concept, and actor and stunt performer Anoop Bikram Shahi was announced as Yamaha’s brand ambassador.
Company executives from Yamaha Motor India Sales attended the event, including Vishnu Kumar Agarwal, chairman; Deepak Kumar Agarwal, executive director and chief executive officer; Rajdeep Singh, general manager, export marketing; and Bipin Singh, deputy general manager, export marketing. Local personalities and content creators were also present.
The new model is an evolution of the FZ Series, a line Yamaha has marketed since 2008. Yamaha said the hybrid system pairs a 149cc fuel-injected engine with a smart motor-assist unit to improve initial acceleration, enable smoother start-stop operation and reduce fuel consumption and emissions — advantages the company said are particularly relevant for city riding.
Yamaha characterised the system as a next-generation hybrid rather than a simple efficiency add-on. The company claims the motorcycle delivers enhanced acceleration through electric assist, seamless low-speed power delivery, improved fuel economy of more than 60 kmpl and lower running costs compared with conventional models.
Technical highlights released by Yamaha include a lightweight body weighing 135 kg, single-channel Bosch ABS, a 220 mm rear disc brake, wide radial tyres, LED headlight with separate high and low beam units, a negative LCD instrument cluster, E20 fuel compatibility, a two-level seat, midship muffler and an engine under cowl for added protection and sporty styling.
Yamaha also set up an Experience Zone at the venue showcasing the FZ Series lineage from 2008 to 2026, with static displays and interactive exhibits for attendees to explore the bike’s design, features and hybrid technology. The company highlighted its nationwide after-sales network of 100 dealerships, 95 fully equipped service points and 117 authorised service providers as support for buyers.
Speaking at the launch, Vishnu Kumar Agarwal said, “This launch marks a significant step forward for Yamaha in Nepal. By introducing hybrid technology in the motorcycle segment, we are moving towards smarter and more responsible performance. Yamaha remains committed to bringing advanced global innovation to Nepali riders.”
In his closing remarks, Deepak Kumar Agarwal thanked partners and customers, saying, “This achievement reflects the collective effort of the entire Yamaha family. Together, we are proud to shape the future of mobility in Nepal.” The company said the launch marks the start of a new hybrid category in Nepal’s motorcycle market.
