KATHMANDU: Nepal Bar Association (NBA) expressed reservations about the Probe Commission 2082 report and held an advisory committee meeting today.

The commission was formed to investigate incidents during the Gen Z protest on September 8 and 9 last year. The NBA said the probe report had mentioned matters related to the judiciary that went beyond the commission’s remit in a condemnable manner, prompting the meeting to consider a formal response.

"The report has come in a way that could negatively affect the judiciary and legal practitioners. We have reservations about the report. It will be discussed seriously among legal practitioners," NBA General Secretary Kedar Prasad Koirala said.

The probe report also highlights concerns about access to justice, including lawyers’ exorbitant fees and the need to prevent justice becoming a 'lawyer's paradise' so that justice is more accessible.

"Ordinary people do not have access to justice; it is said that Nepali citizens are not in a position to access justice easily. For those with no money and no access, justice has become a far cry. Lawyers who are supposed to advocate on behalf of a client are so expensive that even drafting a simple petition can cost thousands," the report states.
