KATHMANDU: Preparations for a nationwide economic survey are complete, with enumerators and supervisors now in place across the country to begin the count, the National Statistics Office (NSO) said on Sunday.

The National Economic Census 2082 will begin on April 15, and data collection in the field is scheduled to be completed by June 21. Nearly 5,000 staff have been mobilised for the enumeration.

Offices in all 77 districts were established for the survey in the third week of March, and a further seven offices were later set up; these facilities will remain in place until mid-July.

The survey will gather basic details of 18 economic sectors. Information to be collected includes the number and types of industries and enterprises, service-sector businesses, cooperatives and public and private entities, as well as employment, production and service delivery.

All trade entities — big and small, registered and unregistered — will be enumerated and their employment data recorded. Non-governmental organisations, public corporations, and government and private schools and hospitals will also be included.

Finance Minister Dr Swarnim Wagle has urged all industrial entities, enterprises and concerned persons to take an active part in the National Economic Census 2082, saying the data collection on economic and industrial sectors is crucial for national planning and policy-making.

The NSO has urged everyone to cooperate with the government initiative to ensure accurate and necessary data are collected. The last such survey, held seven years ago, revealed that Nepal had over 923,000 institutions and industrial entities.
