KATHMANDU: Global Compact Nepal (GCN) and Park Village Resort joined forces with the Nepali Army on Wednesday to carry out a clean-up campaign at Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park in observance of World Earth Day 2026, held under the theme 'Our Power, Our Planet'.

More than 40 volunteers, including GCN members, Park Village Resort staff, friends of the network and personnel from the Chandannath Battalion of Nepali Army, took part in a guided walk through the park, collecting litter along the trail and in adjacent areas. Participants were provided with gloves, masks and repurposed rice bags to gather waste as they moved towards Jamchen Vijaya Stupa and back to the park entrance.

The Nepali Army accompanied the group throughout the hike, helping to keep the route safe and joining in the clean-up efforts. Organisers said the collaboration reflected Park Village Resort’s corporate social responsibility commitment and marked the resort’s recent membership of Global Compact Nepal.

The walk-through format encouraged teamwork on difficult terrain and created opportunities for participants to meet and build new connections. After returning to the park entrance, volunteers formally handed the collected waste to the Nepali Army for responsible disposal to prevent it from re-entering the environment.

GCN Executive Director Krishna Bikram Shah led an informal closing ceremony in which he thanked the Nepali Army for its assistance, acknowledged Park Village Resort for sponsoring the event and lunch, and praised the Global Compact Nepal team, singling out Rajshree Karki, Associate, for organising the campaign.

The morning concluded with participants sharing a sponsored lunch at Park Village Resort, where hikers reflected on the day’s work and the importance of protecting Kathmandu’s green spaces. Organisers said the event demonstrated growing public interest in environmental protection in Nepal and expressed hope that the clean-up will become an annual collaboration.

Key organisers of the Earth Day campaign were Global Compact Nepal, Park Village Resort and the Chandannath Battalion of the Nepali Army. The event ran from 8:00 to midday.
