KATHMANDU: Nepal and Thailand have agreed to deepen cooperation across a range of sectors. The agreement follows a meeting between Nepal’s Ambassador to Thailand, Dhan Bahadur Oli, and Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs at Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The officials discussed ways to expand bilateral ties in trade, investment, tourism, culture, agriculture and education, and reviewed progress on eight memoranda of understanding signed between the countries last year, urging their effective implementation.

Both sides emphasised the need to simplify visa procedures and improve tourism services on a reciprocal basis. They also agreed to step up cooperation on exchanging intelligence and information to combat human trafficking, money laundering and cybercrime.

The meeting covered proposed bilateral agreements on agricultural cooperation and mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, with officials exchanging feedback on draft texts and exploring options for early conclusion.

Officials discussed convening the next meeting of the Nepal-Thailand Joint Consultative Mechanism in Nepal at a mutually convenient date and reaffirmed commitments to strengthen collaboration at regional and multilateral forums, including extending reciprocal support for each other’s candidatures in international bodies.

Discussion further focused on enhancing complementarities in bilateral trade, strengthening value chains for Nepali and Thai products, and creating added value by integrating Himalayan and ocean-based goods and services. The Embassy said the talks aimed to build practical steps for closer economic and security cooperation.
