KATHMANDU: The Second National Economic Census 2082, launched by the National Statistics Office (NSO) on April 15, has reached 87.08% completion. NSO officials announced the progress at a press conference at the Thapathali office on Monday.

Deputy Chief Statistician and NSO spokesperson Dhundi Raj Lamichhane said the census will continue until June 21. He said enumerators across the country have collected field data and that the office has distributed more than 800,000 paper forms and over 10,000 'Census Tokens' so far.

“Data collection in the field is ongoing across the country,” Lamichhane said. “We will continue the exercise until the scheduled end date and urge all establishments to cooperate with enumerators.”

Chief Statistician Dr Kamal Prasad Pokhrel said on-site data gathering is being carried out vigorously and called on institutions involved in the count to provide accurate and factual information. He also asked journalists working in radio to help raise public awareness about the ongoing economic census.

“The National Economic Census can serve as an important basis for the government to achieve its upcoming goals,” Dr Pokhrel said. “It will provide detailed information on business establishments, their numbers, employment and economic status, which will help strengthen estimates of gross domestic product and national accounts in a timely manner. The census will also supply statistical sampling lists for establishment-based surveys and support the formulation and evaluation of economic development policies, plans and programmes across all levels of government.”

The NSO said the census aims to create a comprehensive database of economic activities nationwide to inform policy-making and improve the accuracy of national statistics.
