SUNSARI: President Ramchandra Paudel on Wednesday said the importance and dignity of local government have grown significantly since Nepal became a federal democratic republic. He made the remarks while inaugurating the Laukahi City Hall in Koshi Rural Municipality.
He urged local bodies to speed up development projects that meet basic needs and public demands and to follow the norms, values and ideals of the federal democratic system. “The interests and aspirations of the people, along with the objectives set by the Constitution and the system of governance, can only be fulfilled through peace, development and good governance. I hope you will pay special attention in this regard,” he said.
Paudel emphasised that local governments are the tier of government closest to citizens and must deliver services that meet public expectations, provide necessary facilities and carry out development work. “In this context, the construction of such a modern and multi-purpose City Hall in this rural area is highly commendable. This project is also a good example of co‑operation among all three levels of government in development,” he added.
Highlighting the historical and religious significance of Koshi Rural Municipality on the banks of Saptakoshi River, the President recalled a democratic movement at Kushahaghat and pointed to nearby pilgrimage sites, including Barahakshetra Dham, Ramdhuni, Pindeshwor, Dantakali and Budha Subba Temple. He said the area has strong tourism potential and urged stakeholders to develop it.
Paudel noted progress in rebuilding communities displaced by the 2008 Koshi dam breach and the resulting floods. He called for stronger pre-disaster management in the flood-prone area through coordinated efforts by all three levels of government.
