KATHMANDU: The Department of Postal Service on Tuesday issued a postage stamp honouring Shanti Mishra, who is credited with establishing the country’s first modern library.
Laxmi Kumari Basnet, Secretary at the Ministry of Information and Communication, affixed the first cancellation mark to the stamp at a programme held in Kathmandu. Mishra is recognised for her role in transforming the Tribhuvan University Central Library into a modern facility after its founding in 2016 BS and for establishing the first modern library in 2019 BS.
Secretary Basnet praised Mishra’s dedication and hard work in upgrading the TU Central Library and welcomed the Department’s decision to issue the stamp in her honour.
Mishra’s spouse, Narayan Mishra, spoke about her commitment to library development. "She chose the library over a teaching career to focus on the development and further institutionalisation of libraries," he said.
Sagar Raj Subedi, chair of the TU Central Library, said the facility owes its current status to Mishra’s contributions. He noted the library now holds more than 4,000 collections and has been converted into an e-facility.
Manamaya Bhattarai Pangeni, Director General of the Department of Postal Service, said a stamp serves to recognise historic accomplishments and individuals. "Through this stamp, the Department has acknowledged the contribution of Shanti Mishra and paid homage to the modern library movement," she said.
