KATHMANDU: A meeting of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Thursday endorsed the Cooperative (First Amendment) Bill, 2083.
The majority of lawmakers in the lower house of Parliament passed the bill, which was introduced to replace the ordinance. The bill was presented for decision following deliberations and a subsequent response from the concerned minister.
Responding to queries raised during the discussion, Minister for Land Management, Co-operative, Federal Affairs and General Administration Pratibha Rawal said a separate bill had become indispensable with Nepal being placed on the Grey List globally in relation to money laundering.
She also expressed a commitment to incorporating the feedback received when introducing the forthcoming bill.
Lawmakers including Aren Rai, Ganesh Bahadur Bishwokarma, Ganga Laxmi Awal, Buddhi Prasad Pant, Parbati BK, Prakash Chandra Pariyar, Narendra Kumar Kerung, Basana Thapa, Sajida Khatun Siddiqi, Ganesh Paudel, Rekha Kumari Yadav and Nita Ghatani participated in the discussion.
On the occasion, the lawmakers emphasised that savings deposits should be returned by the respective co-operative, not by the government.
They also stressed that co-operatives should only be allowed to operate at the local level where they are registered and that there should be a single central regulatory authority.
