KATHMANDU: Raju Man Dangol has been elected president of Thamel Tourism Development Council, the common organisation of businesspersons and house owners in the Thamel area.
Election Officer Hari Prasad Pangeni said Dangol defeated Prashraya Rajbhandari in the council election that concluded on Sunday, securing 728 votes to Rajbhandari’s 365.
Rajiv Pandey was elected first vice-president, Dawang (Dawa) Tamang second vice-president and Ramesh Thapa third vice-president.
Pashupati Kandel was elected general secretary with 720 votes, while his rival Punya Ram Lageju received 333 votes. Pangeni said Dilip Kandel and Kinchu Lamu Bhutia (Shrestha) were elected secretary and treasurer of the executive committee, respectively.
Surendra Dangol, Bal Krishna Khanal, Sanu Kaji Maharjan, Roshan Pradhan (Shrestha), Bishwa Man Pradhan, Liza Manandhar, Krishna Bahadur Sedhai and Chandra Tamang were elected as members.
Of 1,309 eligible voters in the council, 1,225 cast their ballots in the election for the upcoming two-year term.
Speaking to reporters after the result, the newly elected president Dangol said his priorities will be to build a safe and well-managed Thamel and to integrate the international tourist hub with technology.
