KATHMANDU: The Department of Passports (DoP) has started passport services through a new passport production and management system, the department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The department said it had completed the country’s largest data migration in history and had begun operating passport services on the new system. It said passport details of about 10 million Nepali citizens had been safely transferred.

The department warned that, after implementing such a large‑scale information technology system, some technical challenges, system slowness and minor delays in passport issuance were to be expected in the initial days.

As a preparation for such eventualities, the department’s technical team and staff, together with experts from the system development company, had been on standby round the clock, continuously monitoring, testing and improving the system, the department said.

The DoP said it was fully capable of resolving problems quickly and was committed to long‑term solutions.

In the initial phase of the new system, only service users for whom a passport is essential have been asked to apply, the department said.

The department said the collaboration would help make the new system more stable and effective and urged service seekers to rely only on information and news about passport services published through the department’s or the ministry’s official channels.
