Communication minister, NRNA representatives discuss bringing capital and technology to Nepal

KATHMANDU: The government has urged Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) to bring skills, technology and capital to Nepal to link diaspora expertise with national development, Minister for Information and Communication Dr Bikram Timilsina said on Tuesday.

Dr Timilsina made the appeal at a meeting with delegates from the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) at the Ministry of Information and Communication. The association’s vice-presidents Rojhina Pradhan Rai and Gyanendra Regmi and Joint Secretary Krishna Pokharel attended.

The minister said policy, legal and practical reforms are being pursued to connect the knowledge, skills, technology and capital of NRNs with the country’s development, and that Nepal is ready to receive investment in information technology, artificial intelligence, data centres and digital infrastructure.

Dr Timilsina added the government is progressing with plans to build modern data centres in several locations and has created an environment that allows investment in AI, data centres, digital infrastructure and IT. He said the administration is committed to making conditions even more convenient for investors.

Highlighting the need to harness untapped diaspora potential through policy measures, the minister urged NRNs to contribute to nation-building by bringing their expertise and capital. He said the government is pursuing multi-pronged reforms to change political culture and deliver citizen-centred services, and will continue despite disruptions to the reform process.

“The government has prioritised results-oriented performance over procedural work,” Dr Timilsina said, adding that officials are moving towards delivering effective services by expanding digital systems and improving policy measures.

NRNA officials outlined preparations for the fourth NRNA Global Knowledge Convention, scheduled to be held in Kathmandu in January 2027, and said they are ready to cooperate with government initiatives on digital transformation, e-governance, artificial intelligence, good governance and digitalisation.
