Sunway Innovation Fest in Kathmandu highlights advances in AI, robotics

KATHMANDU: Artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and drone technology drew significant attention at the Sunway Innovation Fest in Kathmandu on Monday. The event brought together students, technology enthusiasts, researchers and industry experts to experience emerging technological developments.

The innovation fest, organised by Sunway College Kathmandu, saw visitors observe state-of-the-art equipment and engage in hands-on exercises, while attendees gained direct experience with cutting-edge tools through workshops, discussions, competitions and exhibitions.

Bigyan Shrestha, Chairman of Sunway College Kathmandu, said participants benefited from having AI, robotics, drone technology, research, innovation and career development integrated into a single venue.

As part of the festival, Sunway College worked with information technology experts to run training sessions on AI tools and their applications for legal professionals under the Nepal Bar Association and women journalists under the Female Economic Journalist Association (FEJA). Panel discussions on ‘AI in Journalism’ and ‘Physical AI’ brought together experts from communication, technology and research to share insights on how AI is altering journalism, law, industry and daily life. Chairman Shrestha added that attendees learned techniques to develop software quickly, effectively and creatively using modern AI tools.

Business and industry leaders addressed the gathering. Nepal Chamber of Commerce (NCC) President Kamlesh Kumar Agrawal, Immediate Past President Rajendra Malla, and Confederation of Nepalese Industries (CNI) President Birendra Raj Pandey said that, as the coming era belongs to information technology, corresponding policies, investment and research efforts must be undertaken.

To encourage student creativity, the event featured a ‘Student Innovation Showcase’, where projects and apps built by students were awarded and honoured for excellence. Kushal Regmi, principal of Sunway College Kathmandu, said the showcase provided students with the opportunity to present their research and projects to industry representatives, experts and other participants.

The festival also included career counselling and mock interview sessions tailored for students and young professionals. Participants interacted directly with industry specialists and received practical advice on job opportunities, interview preparation and career development.
