KATHMANDU: Federation of Computer Association Nepal (CAN Federation) has appealed for peace and a favourable business environment amid recent unrest and violent incidents affecting eastern Nepal and parts of Tarai region.

The technology body said the disturbances have harmed ordinary citizens, industrialists and entrepreneurs and pose a threat to public safety and property.

"Unity in diversity, ethnic and religious tolerance, mutual harmony, and brotherhood are the fundamental identity and national strength of Nepali society," CAN Federation said.

While acknowledging that expressing demands or disagreement through peaceful means is a constitutional right in a democratic system, the federation emphasised that acts of violence, vandalism, arson and disruption of social harmony are unacceptable. It warned such incidents devastate the information technology sector, industry, commercial activities and the national economy.

The federation urged all concerned parties to abandon violence, exercise restraint and seek a swift solution through dialogue and mutual understanding via democratic processes. It called on the Government of Nepal and the home administration to ensure the safety of life and private and public property, and to restore normal public life and a conducive business environment as soon as possible.

The organisation also appealed to citizens, political parties, civil society, entrepreneurs, professionals, youth and media personnel to play a positive role in strengthening ethnic, religious and social harmony. It reaffirmed its commitment to building lasting peace, the rule of law and a favourable business environment in the country.
