HoR session: MPs demand judicial committee to investigate Sunsari, Tarai‑Madhes incidents
KATHMANDU: Lawmakers in the House of Representatives have demanded that the government form a judicial committee to investigate recent incidents in Sunsari and the Tarai‑Madhes region.
Seeking time in the lower house session, MPs called for a thorough and impartial inquiry. Bharat Bahadur Khadka urged a fair probe and asked the government to inform the House of its findings and the measures it will take to prevent recurrence.
Amaresh Kumar Singh praised the roles of Prime Minister Balendra Shah and Rastriya Swatantra Party president Rabi Lamichhane in managing recent unrest in Sunsari and the Tarai‑Madhes, and accused authorities of issuing direct orders for gunfire during agitations and disputes, calling for an end to that practice.
Shiba Shankar welcomed government initiatives to provide justice to victims and said security forces should not resort to gunfire unless necessary.
Several MPs raised other concerns. Shraddha Kunwar highlighted a shortage of rabies vaccines in government health facilities and an apparent artificial shortage of cooking gas, urging prompt government action. Prem Lal Chaudhary drew attention to landslide damage in Ilam and demanded measures to ensure safe year‑round movement for residents.
Ambika Devi Sangroula told the House that families of victims of a Bardiya bus accident remain without justice. Ankita Thakur called for improved facilities for security personnel deployed along border areas and reiterated concerns about rabies vaccine shortages.
Indira Rana Magar expressed grief over the deaths of climbers, including Nirmal Purja, during a recent expedition to Pakistan’s Broad Peak and urged the government to recognise Purja as a national luminary.
