Huawei unveils Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design with LogicFolding Tau chip
GUANGZHOU, CHINA: Huawei officially unveiled the Huawei Mate XT 2 Ultimate Design on Monday, marking the first smartphone to feature the LogicFolding Tau chip and bringing the component into mass commercialisation. The device will go on sale from September 12, with models starting at RMB 19,999 and an optional stylus set.
The wing-like tri-fold handset opens from both sides and features a back panel inspired by Chinese aesthetics, with a cloud pattern crafted using Brocade Cloud techniques. It is offered in purple, white and black. The camera ring uses a Star Diamond Glow design made from yttrium crystal fired at 1,800°C and polished to create 33 facets.
Built for durability, the phone utilises the Xuanwu Ultra‑Durable Tri‑Fold Architecture and is the first tri‑fold device to achieve IP58 and IP59 dust and water resistance ratings. The cover screen is protected by anti‑glare Xuanwu Kunlun Glass, whilst the main screen combines ultra‑thin glass, aerospace‑grade high‑strength steel and a carbon fibre support layer. The Advanced Precision Hinge System 2.0 employs a five‑curved arm structure to ensure reliable pressure resistance.
Performance is driven by the Kirin 9050 Pro processor, which boosts overall device performance by 42% compared with the previous generation. The platform includes a LinxiCore CPU for multitasking and a Maleoon GPU that supports hardware‑level real‑time ray tracing for gaming.
On‑device artificial intelligence is supported by the Huawei Da Vinci Architecture NPU, which natively runs the Pangu 30B‑A2B MoE large language model to enable features such as smart album management. Thermal management spreads heat across the three sections using vapour chambers and highly conductive graphene.
Connectivity includes 32 distributed antennas and support for Tiantong and Beidou satellite communication. Security is strengthened by a Mobile Security Processor with an independent chip that has achieved EAL5+ certification.
The handset introduces a hardware‑level foldable Smart Shield Privacy Screen with an independent dual‑pixel layout to preserve a clear front view while protecting privacy. It also incorporates electrocardiogram analysis software and holds an NMPA Class II Medical Device Registration Certificate, allowing users to measure heart activity by holding the unfolded screen with both hands.
Photography is handled by the True‑to‑Colour Camera 3.0 system, which filters infrared light to improve colour reproduction by 95%. The module comprises an ultra‑HDR main camera, an ultra‑wide aperture periscope telephoto lens and an ultra‑wide‑angle lens. Video recording supports an ultra‑high dynamic range of 18 EV, and the XMAGE SmartCapture system recognises scenes and offers real‑time AI previews for composition.
The phone runs HarmonyOS 7 and enhances the large‑screen experience with Live‑Multitask, allowing three parallel windows with adjustable sizes for finance, entertainment and office tasks.
