Shashi Tharoor launches Nepali edition of his book 'म किन हिन्दू' in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU: Indian politician, author and intellectual Shashi Tharoor and Fine Prints Publication co-founder Niraj Bhari unveiled the Nepali edition of Tharoor’s book, ‘म किन हिन्दू’, at the Nepal Academy on Wednesday.

Addressing the growing intersection of faith and politics, Tharoor outlined the main focus of his work.

"Faith had suddenly become not just a matter of individual belief, but it had also become an object of politics," Tharoor said. "It had actually been used to mobilise political support. And the version of Hinduism that was being promoted in my country’s politics was one that I, as a Hindu, could not recognise."

The event featured a conversation between Tharoor and Dovan Rai, a computer scientist, educator and writer. Their discussion covered the contents of the book and extended to pluralism, faith and secular democracy in South Asia.

Tharoor discussed religion, identity, democratic values and coexistence in the region.

The book presents his personal and scholarly reflections on Hinduism while analysing its philosophical traditions and religious practices, as well as the political rise of Hindutva.

The discussion was followed by an interactive session in which Tharoor answered questions from attendees.

Journalist Swechchha Raut translated the English text into Nepali. The Nepali edition was published by Fine Prints Publication.

The launch was originally planned for the 2025 Nepal Literature Festival in Pokhara but was postponed until this year owing to time constraints.
