MFD warns of heavy rain from Friday to Monday

KATHMANDU: Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of the country from Friday through to Monday.

In a special weather bulletin issued on Monday, the MFD said heavy to very heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds, is likely in parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces from Friday until Monday.

The bulletin also forecasts heavy to very heavy rain with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in isolated locations across Madhesh, Koshi, Bagmati and Sudurpaschim provinces, and heavy rain in parts of Karnali Province. Authorities have urged travellers to exercise necessary caution.

The change in conditions is linked to a low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal that is intensifying and expected to move west-north-west. Rainfall activity is expected to increase in Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces from Wednesday as a result.

Noting that water levels in major rivers and streams could rise and affect daily life, agriculture, health and tourism, the division advised general caution. It specifically urged those planning high‑altitude treks or mountaineering expeditions to monitor local weather conditions closely and exercise a high degree of caution because heavy snowfall is possible in mountainous areas.
