Monsoon trough weakens; heavy rainfall risk eases in Sudurpashchim

SUDURPASHCHIM: The risk of heavy monsoon rainfall in Sudurpashchim Province has eased after a monsoon trough that moved from the Bay of Bengal gradually weakened, Nepal Meteorological Department’s field office in Attariya in Kailali district said.

The province has received continuous rain since September 25. Engineer Sanjay Kumar Shah, chief of the Attariya office, said the low-pressure system began to weaken this afternoon but urged people to remain alert. He warned there was still a possibility of heavy rain at one or two places in the Tarai this afternoon, while moderate rainfall is likely across the province from tonight.

Forecasters expected generally cloudy conditions across the mountainous, hilly and Tarai regions this afternoon, with moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in many areas and heavy rain at one or two locations. From tonight, cloud cover is likely to persist across the same regions, with moderate rain and thunder possible in some areas.

By next Wednesday, most areas are forecast to be partly cloudy, with a chance of moderate rain in places. Night skies in the Tarai are expected to remain generally clear.
