Niraj Sharma appointed as CEO of eSewa

KATHMANDU: Niraj Sharma has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of eSewa, Nepal's leading payment service provider. The decision was made by the eSewa board of directors during a meeting on September 15, with Sharma officially assuming his four-year tenure on Monday.

This appointment follows the conclusion of the four-year tenure of outgoing CEO Jagdish Khadka, who was appointed on September 28, 2022.

The board of directors expressed confidence that Sharma's extensive background in banking and digital financial services will strengthen the company's future endeavours. The board believes his leadership skills and expertise will be instrumental in advancing the company's upcoming strategic priorities, meeting evolving customer needs, and continuing the achievements garnered in the past.

Sharma brings over 25 years of leadership experience within the banking and financial sector. His expertise spans transaction banking, card systems, digital transformation, and retail banking. He is noted for his capability in digital innovation, strategic growth, and developing customer-centric products, alongside a substantial background in spearheading team leadership and corporate transformation.

Under Khadka's management, eSewa significantly expanded its services, reach, and digital financial scope. His tenure saw a notable increase in users, merchants, and authorised representatives, with the platform exceeding 14 million registered users and surpassing 600,000 merchants.

Khadka played a vital role in making digital payments and financial management more accessible and secure. Key expansions during his term included digital credit facilities, Finance 360, eSewa Circle, Business Link, Business App, Intent Pay, calendar and event services, and various insurance and lifestyle features. Additionally, financial services became more accessible with the introduction of a 'Talkback' feature for the visually impaired and a Nepali language app option for the general public.

The company stated that eSewa has continuously worked on creating an inclusive digital financial experience, embracing its brand promise of 'Everyone. Always. Together.' According to the company, the achievements during Khadka's tenure have laid a stronger foundation for the future journey of eSewa.
