RASUWA: Relief materials have been provided to 60 vulnerable households in Dandagaun, Uttargaya Rural Municipality-2, in the Bhotekoshi flood-affected Rasuwa district. The assistance was distributed through the Integrated Humanitarian and Early Recovery Programme, supported by Start Fund Nepal.
Lubh Raj Neupane, Executive Director of Rural-Oriented Youth Movement (ROYM) Nepal, said the materials were distributed to provide immediate assistance to flood-affected families and those at high risk, particularly households headed by single women. Supplies in the first phase included winter items, drinking water and sanitation materials. Further relief distribution is scheduled for wards 1 and 5 of the same rural municipality next week.
Community kitchens have been operating at three locations across Rasuwa and Nuwakot for the past month with financial support from UN Women, facilitated by ROYM Nepal. Goma Bista, Administrative and Financial Assistant of ROYM Nepal, said the kitchens supply breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner daily to flood-affected and displaced families. He added that employment and work opportunities have also been provided to disaster-hit families at the community kitchens in coordination with local ward offices.
ROYM Nepal plans to provide financial assistance to at least 300 households to support livelihoods. Preparations are also under way to distribute blankets, quilts, thermals, thermoses and hot-water bottles to 1,000 households ahead of the winter season.
“Financial support will also be provided to affected families to earn a living,” Neupane said. The organisation said that through relief, employment and livelihood assistance, disaster-affected families are expected to obtain immediate income opportunities during difficult times to ease daily life.
Anup Khanal, Management Coordinator of ROYM Nepal, said the organisation has also been repairing water-supply pipelines damaged by the flood in Bidur Municipality of Nuwakot and Uttargaya Rural Municipality of Rasuwa.
Tuku Subedi, ward chairperson of Dandagaun, Uttargaya Rural Municipality-2, said the relief and assistance provided during the disaster have significantly helped the affected community in their daily lives. She urged that support and facilitation should continue in future according to the needs and conditions of the community.
The initiatives are carried out under the Resilience, Adaptation and Inclusion in Nepal (RAIN) programme, supported by Start Fund Nepal through the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO). Implemented under the guidance of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), the programme is led by the NGO ASAMAN Nepal in collaboration with ROYM Nepal, LACCOS and Welthungerhilfe (WHH). These organisations are running programmes for drinking water and sanitation, health, education, child protection, psychosocial support, nutrition and livelihood restoration in the flood-affected areas.
