
KATHMANDU: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nepal (ICAN) began the '2nd National Convention of Accounting Professionals' in Kathmandu, on Wednesday.
According to ICAN, the convention aims to create an enabling environment for promoting sustainability reporting, to better connect with government and regulators in partnering for national economic development and to set a clear direction for the accounting profession amidst the challenges in the national economy with improved cooperation and coordination among the Regulating Authorities.
ICAN President Bhaskar Singh Lala, who chaired the programme, shared that the convention was organised to inform about the existing national and international practices in the accounting profession, coordinate with concerned agencies for building financial good governance and contribute to strengthening the economy by enhancing the role of ICAN members.
In his address to the inaugural session of the convention, Auditor General Tanka Mani Sharma highlighted the crucial role of accounting professionals in keeping compliance for fiscal discipline in the country. He shed light on the important role of accounting professionals to dig out the issues associated with financial irregularities.
'Irregularities are increasing day after day. Tax settlement has become sluggish. It is also the responsibility of the auditors to see the irregularities surfaced in private sector', Auditor General Sharma said.
He asked the accounting professionals to look after such issues in a professional manner which he said would help reduce irregularities.
The role of the chartered accountants is not only to rectify the financial transactions of the state agencies and public enterprises but also to maintain financial discipline, he said.
Sharma further highlighted the need of maintaining professional credibility through dignified accounting professionalism.
On the occasion, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Baburam Subedi said the financial report prepared by accounts professionals reflects the face of the state.
A total of four sessions will be held in the two-day conference. As informed, working papers will be presented on different topics along with the screening of the organisation-related documentary on the occasion.
The convention being held at Nepal Academy, Kamaladi will conclude on Thursday.
