
KATHMANDU: ‘Global Money Week-2023’ has begun today with the slogan ‘Plan your money, plant your future’.
This is the 11th edition of the weekly event that is held every year in March.
On the first day of the event today, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) organised a financial awareness programme in Lalitpur with the participation of more than 100 students from various colleges.
NRB Governor Maha Prasad Adhikari inaugurated the programme organised in collaboration with Nepal Insurance Authority, Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON), Department of Co-operatives, and Nepal Banking Institute Ltd.
On the occasion, NRB Governor Adhikari expressed his belief that the trend of spending was increasing more than saving in Nepal. He said, “The trend of saving is weaker. So, we need to develop the habit of saving. Savings show the way of investment and income." He urged students to flow their knowledge of financial literacy and awareness into society and families.
The programme was attended by SEBON Chairman Ramesh Kumar Hamal, Nepal Insurance Authority Chairman Surya Prasad Silwal, NRB Deputy Governor duo Nilam Dhungana Timsina and Bam Bahadur Mishra among other senior officials from the central bank and financial sector.
Kiran Pandit, Executive Director at the Office of the Governor at NRB delivered the welcome speech and highlighted the relevance and importance of Global Money Week.
In the second session of the programme, NRB, SEBON, Nepal Insurance Authority and the Department of Co-operatives presented four working papers covering the promotion of financial awareness.
As part of the campaign scheduled to run till March 26 in coordination with the central bank, various awareness programmes will be held to increase financial awareness throughout the country.
Nepal Insurance Authority, SEBON, Department of Co-operatives, National Banking Institute, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Citizen Investment Trust will separately organise programmes aimed at youths. Likewise, banks and financial institutions (BFIs), payment service providers and remittance companies will also organise targeted programmes for Global Money Week.
Under this campaign, various programmes have been planned with the aim of increasing awareness about banking, financial, capital market, insurance, cooperative services. The financial awareness interaction, rally and awareness competition will be conducted among students while audio-visual content and interviews will be broadcast through social media and networks. Similarly, a programme has been arranged to allow young students to observe financial service providers.
It is expected that the campaign will help in achieving the goal of the economic prosperity of the country by promoting financial literacy among young students, and expanding financial access, creating self-employment and developing entrepreneurship, increasing production and income levels.
'Global Money Week' is a campaign that is run worldwide with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of financial education among youths.
This campaign is conducted in more than 170 countries every year in coordination with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
'Learn.Save.Earn.' is the permanent slogan of Global Money Week.
