KATHMANDU: The first international gathering of summiteers of Sagarmatha (Mt Everest) is set to take place in Nepal on May 27.
The event, Everest Summiteers Summit, aims to bring together climbers, provide a forum for sharing experiences, and promote adventure tourism, according to organiser Everest Alliance Nepal.
Alliance Chair Sudarshan Nepal said 177 climbers from 16 countries have confirmed their registrations for the summit. A total of 500 climbers who have already reached the top of the world's highest peak are expected to attend. They will represent India, China, the United States, Britain, Italy, Switzerland, Iran, Singapore, Australia, Lebanon, Morocco and the UAE.
The gathering will include climbers from seven decades ago who will share their experiences. Individuals with disabilities who have reached the summit will also give presentations.
Kanchha Sherpa, the last surviving member of the historic 1953 expedition to Mount Everest, will be honoured at the event. He was part of the team alongside Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, who became the first to reach the summit.
The summit will feature discussions on the impacts of climate change on mountain ecosystems, with panel sessions including representatives from WWF, ICIMOD, IUCN and other organisations.
The event is supported by several prominent organisations, including the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), among others.
