Lamp-lighting ceremony held in memory of flood and disaster victims

KATHMANDU: An oil-lamp lighting ceremony was held at Pashupatinath Temple on Monday in memory of those who lost their lives in floods, landslides and other natural disasters across the country, including the Bhotekoshi River flood in Rasuwa on August 26.

The programme was organised by the Pashupati Area Development Trust (PADT).

PADT Member-Secretary Tirtha Shrestha said butter lamps were lit in front of the Pashupatinath Temple in the evening to pray for the eternal peace of the departed souls and to express condolences to bereaved families.

He said prayers were also offered for the speedy recovery of those injured in the floods and for the swift location of those still missing. Thousands of devotees took part in the ceremony.

Earlier in the day, hymns from religious scriptures were recited along the banks of the Bagmati River at Pashupatinath.

Vedic Brahmins offered prayers and recited verses from various scriptures, wishing peace for the souls of all known and unknown victims who died in the Bhotekoshi flood in Rasuwa.

The prayer programme, which included scripture recitations, was coordinated by Swami Dr Rudrananda Brahmachari, successor of the Bhagwat Sanyas Ashram at the Pashupatinath Sri Ramchandra Temple.

Brahmin students from Nepal Veda Vidyashram and Sanskrit Secondary School in Ranipokhari, along with preachers and representatives of various religious organisations, also participated in the event.
