KATHMANDU: China Tourism Day was observed in Kathmandu on Tuesday evening with an event attended by various stakeholders.

The programme was jointly organised by the China Cultural Center, China National Tourist Office, and China Southern Airlines. It saw participation from Nepal’s business community, the travel sector, the Chinese business fraternity, government officials, and other stakeholders.

China commemorates May 19 as its Tourism Day, honouring Ming Dynasty traveller Xu Xiake.

Speaking at China Southern Airlines Appreciation Event and China Tourism Day Promotion, Xiao Jiang, Director of the China Cultural Center in Kathmandu, highlighted tourism’s role in modern leisure and lifestyle, stressing its ability to foster dialogue, mutual understanding, and friendships among nations while contributing to the creation of a shared future for humanity.

Yang Wenfu, General Manager of China Southern Airlines’ Kathmandu Office, discussed efforts to strengthen the China-Nepal route network. He expressed confidence in collaborating with Nepali stakeholders to further develop China-Nepal tourism and reaffirmed the airline’s commitment to advancing aviation and tourism ties between the two nations.

Mohan Suwal, a representative of the China Tourism Office in Kathmandu, provided a detailed presentation on China’s tourism landscape, showcasing its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and modern achievements.

He outlined China’s key festivals, including the Spring Festival (Chinese New Year), the Lantern Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, and the Mid-Autumn Festival. He also spoke about China’s abundant historical sites, which embody the memory and wisdom of its people, mentioning landmarks such as Xi’an’s ancient city, the Terracotta Army, and Beijing’s Forbidden City.

China ranks second globally in UNESCO-listed cultural and natural heritage sites, boasting 59 such locations. The country remains a leading source of inbound tourism, while a significant number of Nepali nationals visit China annually.
