KATHMANDU: The 18th Republic Day was observed nationwide today with a series of official events. President Ramchandra Paudel attended a formal ceremony at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel, organised by the Republic Day Main Celebration Committee. A contingent of the Nepali Army presented a guard of honour to the President, who serves as both patron of the Constitution and Supreme Commander of the Nepali Army.

Tributes were paid to the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the country, with reflections on the contributions of predecessors to the democratic struggle.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, also Chair of the Main Celebration Committee, addressed the gathering during the event. He emphasised that the republic belongs to the people and is built on their votes. Comparing Nepal’s progress in the 17 years since its establishment with the 250-year monarchy, he highlighted significant advancements in education, communications, and infrastructure. He urged citizens to unite in strengthening the republic, an achievement realised through the sacrifices of thousands.

Among the dignitaries present were Vice President Ram Sahaya Prasad Yadav, Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut, Speaker Devraj Ghimire, National Assembly Chairperson Narayan Prasad Dahal, and Deputy Prime Minister Prakash Man Singh. Ahead of the main proceedings, a Nepali Army helicopter displayed a banner reading “Republic Day – 2082 BS” and showered flower petals over the venue.

Local levels, including Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Lalitpur Metropolitan City, and Kirtipur Municipality, showcased traditional dances and musical performances. The Nepali Army, Nepal Police, and the Armed Police Force, Nepal, conducted a march-past, while colourful balloons and pigeons were released to symbolise joy in the institutionalisation of the republic.

Republic Day marks the historic declaration of Nepal as a federal democratic republic, first proclaimed on Jestha 15, 2065 BS (28 May 2008), bringing an end to the 240-year-old monarchy. The occasion is observed annually by political parties, community groups, and diplomatic missions both within Nepal and abroad.
