KATHMANDU: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharat Singh Bhandari has pointed out the need for policy-level arrangements to tackle fraud in the name of foreign employment.
Responding to queries on various sections of the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security’s (MoLESS) Appropriation Bill, 2082, at Tuesday’s meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister Bhandari said additional responsibilities will be given to District Administration Offices to address cases of foreign employment fraud.
He noted that around 36,000 such cases have now been registered at the Department of Foreign Employment, adding that steps have been taken to assign further duties to District Administration Offices by expanding institutional structures.
Stating that some 11.6% of the country’s population is in foreign employment, Minister Bhandari argued that it has become increasingly challenging to create domestic jobs immediately.
“The ministry is striving to involve capable and skilled human resources in domestic employment by developing the country’s human capital,” he said, adding that a technical study is under way for the development of a National Labour Market Information System, which would enable migrant workers to establish direct contact with home.
The labour minister also mentioned that arrangements have been made to send workers to Europe through institutional channels from next July.
