PATAN: Minister for Labour, Employment and Social Security Sharat Singh Bhandari has said those who exploit legal loopholes to defraud migrant workers will be brought to book.
Speaking at a Safer Migration (SaMi) Programme event in Lalitpur today, Minister Bhandari said there are “36,000 cases of fraud at the Department of Foreign Employment. So we are planning to amend the constitution in order to settle such cases and take action against those involved in cheating.”
He said promoting employment at home offers an alternative to forced foreign migration and that priority is being given to domestic job creation alongside safe foreign employment.
“The Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security is planning to launch a campaign through SaMi to support the country’s economic development and prosperity by bringing Nepalis back from foreign employment. We have now launched programmes through the Skill Development Foundation, keeping internal employment in mind,” he added.
He mentioned that the SaMi Project had proven its relevance and that the MoLESS intends to expand the safe migration initiative to all 753 local levels.
Secretary at MoLESS, Krishna Hari Pushkar, said the government would play a positive role in implementing the SaMi Programme. A representative of the Swiss Embassy in Nepal described the SaMi Project as a significant learning opportunity.
