KATHMANDU: Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) has a plan to host Power Summit 2025, the ninth international energy-sector event, on September 17 and 18.
The summit’s theme is ‘Mission 28,500 MW: Powering Nepal, Energizing Region’. It will be organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation (MoEWRI) of Nepal, with India as country partner through the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, and will include participants from various national and international organisations, agencies and companies, IPPAN said in a press statement on Thursday.
Previous summits took place in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2013, 2016, 2019 and 2023.
More than 1,000 participants from 30 countries are expected, including investors; officials from diplomatic and development partner missions; government and non-governmental organisations; universities; consulting and construction firms; banks and financial institutions; insurance companies; stakeholders; and experts. They will engage in policy debates, share successes and exchange experiences to support the Energy Development Roadmap 2081.
The summit aims to strengthen Nepal’s identity as a green-energy developing country, address regional and international concerns, support South Asia’s net-zero targets and foster sustainable, inclusive energy development. It is also expected to offer concrete guidance for Nepal’s sustainable energy growth and strengthen its presence in regional markets.
Under the government’s Energy Development Roadmap 2081, Nepal aims to generate an additional 25,000 MW within the next decade. Currently, the private sector contributes more than 80% of Nepal’s 3,602 MW installed capacity, of which independent power producers account for 2,900 MW. The private sector has mobilised over Rs 1,300 billion in investment to date and plans to invest further Rs 5,000 billion.
Projects totalling 4,200 MW are under construction, while further 4,100 MW of capacity awaits financing after power-purchase agreements have been finalised, IPPAN added.
