Govt declares Shrawan 16 as National Millet Day

KATHMANDU: The government has decided to observe the 16th day of the Nepali month of Shrawan each year as National Millet Day.

In a statement releasing the decisions of the Cabinet meeting held on July 7, Government Spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Prithvi Subba Gurung said permission had been granted to the Vice-Chairman of the National Planning Commission, Professor Dr Shiva Raj Adhikari, to participate in a meeting of the High-Level Political Mechanism for Sustainable Development in New York from July 14 to 24. He added that the Chief Minister of Gandaki Province had been authorised to visit China from July 22 to 28 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Nepal–China diplomatic relations.

The government also approved the design and dimensions of new Rs 1,000 banknotes to be introduced by Nepal Rastra Bank.

The meeting further approved an additional $10.8 million grant from the World Bank for the School Sector Improvement Programme, the transfer of 37 lieutenant generals, and the provision of national forest land in Resunga Municipality-8, Gulmi District, for the construction of a zip line and sky-cycling facility. It granted the Ministry of Forests and Environment permission to attend the Strengthen Cooperation Programme in Norway from July 25 to 30.

Minister Gurung said the Cabinet had renewed the memorandum of understanding signed between the governments of Nepal and Japan on March 20, 2019, to allow certain skilled workers to travel to Japan for five years. It also approved the operation and maintenance of the Water and Energy Commission Secretariat and its subordinate offices, the Casino Regulations, 2082, and the National Census Policy, 2082.

He noted that decisions of the Council of Ministers’ meeting held on July 14 had also been made public.

The Cabinet approved Dr Jaya Bahadur Tandon, a member of the National Planning Commission, to participate in the Second UN Food Systems Summit Stock Take event in Ethiopia from July 27 to 29.

A committee chaired by former High Court Judge Krishna Giri, with members Jivan Prakash Sitoula and Kapildev Oli, has been formed to investigate Sharad Ojha, chair of the Nepal Insurance Authority Board of Directors. Until the inquiry concludes, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Finance Sewantak Pokhrel will act as chair of the board.

The Cabinet agreed to accept an additional concessional loan of JPY 5.7 billion from the Government of Japan for the Nagdhunga Tunnel project and authorised the Nepali ambassador to South Africa, Professor Kapilman Shrestha, to attend the First Global SME Ministerial Meeting in Johannesburg from July 22 to 24.

It approved the use of 2-6-1-2 ropani of land registered to the Dadeldhura District Coordination Committee for a multipurpose building; appointed Dr Khagaraj Sharma of Rupandehi as chair of the National Cooperative Regulatory Authority; and extended the term of the Phapla International Cricket Ground and Sports Infrastructure Development Committee by four months from July 13.

The Cabinet granted the Minister for Communications and Information Technology permission to attend the World Artificial Intelligence Conference – 2025 in Shanghai from July 26 to 28, and the Minister for Health and Population, Pradip Paudel, to attend the Global Health Forum – 2025 in Beijing on July 24 and 25.
