LONDON: Himalaya Jet, an airline based in Britain, has pledged a 10-year sponsorship of the Nepali diaspora’s two largest annual events in the UK — the Nepali Mela and the Gurkha Cup.
The commitment forms part of the airline’s corporate social responsibility programme and was announced at a ceremony hosted by Tamu Dhee UK in collaboration with the Embassy of Nepal.
The agreement was marked by a traditional piper ceremony and a champagne toast honouring Dipendra Gurung MIoD, owner and president of Himalaya Jet.
Jumkaji Gurung, Chair of Tamu Dhee UK, described the sponsorship as “the biggest game-changing project in the history of Nepal and the Nepali people.”
Himalaya Jet also confirmed that direct flights from Sydney and Perth in Australia, and from major European cities including Paris, Frankfurt, Madrid, Lisbon and London, to Kathmandu are in the final stages of preparation. The inaugural services are due to launch in autumn 2025 after years of regulatory compliance and coordination across multiple authorities.
Looking ahead, the airline plans to connect global casino destinations Las Vegas and Macau, to Monte Carlo on the French Riviera by 2027/28. These routes will feature state-of-the-art First and Business Class cabins designed for luxury travellers.
Kamal Gurung, Chief Coordinator of Tamu Dhee UK, said that in its 25-year history, the organisation had never before honoured a chief guest at such a high level.
Ian George, executive at the Gurung Family Office, provided further details on Himalaya Jet’s wider aviation investments and airport infrastructure projects under the Gurung Family Conglomerate.
In closing remarks, Himalaya Jet President Gurung extended his gratitude to the executive team of Tamu Dhee UK, its trustees and advisers, senior representatives of the Non-Resident Nepali Association, UK government councillors of Nepali origin, Gurkha leaders and community chiefs, and all well-wishers for their support.
