KATHMANDU: Nepali literary figure Basant Chaudhary, known for his poetry, ghazals, songs and inspirational thoughts, has entered the field of fiction with his debut novel ‘Devyani’. Published by Sangri-La Books, the work has sparked considerable discussion in Nepali literature about love, relationships and inner struggle, and is receiving praise from literary enthusiasts.
The novel examines the psychology of love, female consciousness and the internal conflict of men. Its plot centres on two women from contrasting backgrounds and the male characters connected to them. Through their intertwined stories, the book explores emotional depth and interpersonal tension.
The characters in ‘Devyani’ symbolise silent rebellion within society, emotional unrest and the search for identity. One woman leads a realistic and simple life, while the other is self-centred, modern and perceptive. The male protagonist is caught between these forces, unable to free himself or make a definitive choice.
Novelist Chaudhary redefines love as not merely an emotion but as a path to awareness, allowing readers to experience it as both devotion and struggle. “I wrote about a side that has been less written about in Nepali literature – the inner conflict generated by love, which is truly the everyday reality of society,” he says, discussing the novel’s many dimensions with openness.
‘Devyani’ is more than a conventional love story. It conveys emotions constrained by social taboos, where characters do not speak yet their silence communicates protest. The female figures pursue recognition and emotional fulfilment through self-awareness rather than noise.
Chaudhary’s style is straightforward, emotive and expressive. His poetic background is evident throughout the writing. Dialogue is profound, characters are well developed and the narrative flows smoothly, though some critics have remarked that its emotional depth could have been more pronounced.
For readers interested in themes of love, internal conflict and female consciousness, ‘Devyani’ is highly recommended. Chaudhary’s novel combines psychology, emotion and social reflection, offering a realistic portrayal of love in a literary landscape where such depictions remain uncommon.
