KATHMANDU: Minister for Tourism, Culture and Civil Aviation Badri Prasad Pandey has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an investment-friendly environment to encourage private sector investment in tourism.

Speaking at the Kalanki Hotel and Guest House Association’s 13th annual general assembly in Kathmandu today, Minister Pandey said the government cannot run hotels and similar businesses by itself. “Hence, the government is ready to roll out the red carpet to welcome private sector investment in the hospitality and tourism sectors,” he added.

The Tourism Minister urged the sector to cooperate with regulatory efforts, avoid labour exploitation and refrain from charging customers exorbitant rates. He suggested treating guests in a way that encourages them to return again and again.

Highlighting that the popularity of Thakali cuisine stems from its presentation with warm hospitality, he emphasised the importance of infrastructure alongside good service in the tourism and hospitality sectors.

The association, established in 2009, represents 105 guest houses and hotels in the Kalanki, Koteshwor and Swoyambhu areas of Kathmandu. It plans to issue a code of conduct for hoteliers, launch a sanitation drive in Kalanki and undertake other social activities to mark its 13th anniversary.
