KATHMANDU: Pokhara International Airport has opened up new possibilities for the expansion of tourism and trade, Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI) President Chandra Prasad Dhakal stated on Friday.

Addressing the 29th annual general meeting (AGM) and 15th Convention of Lekhnath Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), Kaski, FNCCI President Dhakal emphasised the need for its effective operation.

He expressed the view that regularising flights from Pokhara Airport would further energise the region’s tourism sector. At present, Himalaya Airlines operates a weekly flight, Sichuan Airlines is preparing services to Australia via Chengdu, and Bhutan Airlines has planned chartered flights.

Highlighting Pokhara’s location in Gandaki Province and its natural beauty, the FNCCI President said the area holds immense potential for economic prosperity. He stressed the importance of identifying agriculture, tourism, hydropower, information technology, health, and education as key sectors for investment and entrepreneurship.

Praising the Lekhnath CCI’s contribution over nearly three decades, Dhakal acknowledged its role in protecting and promoting local businesses, creating jobs, and fostering entrepreneurship. He said the organisation has played a significant part in business policy formulation, supporting small and medium enterprises, and bringing local products to market.

Dhakal also pointed to Pokhara’s arable land and favourable climate as ideal for producing rice, maize, vegetables, and fruits. He emphasised the need for branding and market expansion of local organic products.
