Thousands of young demonstrators took to the streets across major cities, including Kathmandu, Pokhara, Butwal, and Biratnagar, demanding an end to corruption and opposing the government’s recent decision to ban 26 unregistered social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp.

In Baneshwor, protesters broke through police barricades and some climbed onto gates and guard posts near the Federal Parliament premises. Police responded with water cannons and tear gas, while protesters hurled branches and bottles, chanting slogans against the government. Some demonstrators even entered the Parliament compound.

Following the escalation, Chief District Officer Chhabilal Rijal issued a prohibitory order under Section 6 of the Local Administration Act, 2028. The curfew, effective from 12:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, covers:

  • West: From New Baneshwor Chowk to Bijulibazar Bridge via Everest Hotel
  • East: From New Baneshwor Chowk to Tinkune Chowk via Minbhawan and Shantinagar
  • North: From New Baneshwor Chowk to Ratna Rajya Secondary School via Eyeplex Mall
  • South: From New Baneshwor Chowk to Shankhamul Bridge via Shankhamul Road

The order bans all movement, gatherings, rallies, demonstrations, or sit-ins within the designated areas.

Authorities said the curfew was enforced to prevent violence and maintain order as protests intensified in the capital.
