KATHMANDU: Security agencies have urged all sections of society not to engage in any activities that could disrupt the gradually normalising law and order situation.

Nepali Army (NA) personnel took charge of security operations at 10.00pm on Tuesday after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli stepped down, while prohibitory orders and curfews have been imposed across Kathmandu Valley and some other districts.

Security personnel have reportedly detained 27 suspected looters as they patrolled the streets.

The streets of Kathmandu were free of protests on Wednesday as well as this morning. Some shops have reopened during the day in Thamel as peace returned.

A rally that began peacefully turned violent on Monday and Tuesday in the capital and other parts of the country, leaving 30 dead and more than 1,000 injured by Wednesday, according to the Ministry of Health and Population.

Key state buildings, including the Parliament building in New Baneshwor, Singha Durbar and the residences of the President and the Prime Minister, were set on fire during the protests on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Nepal Police said 13,572 prisoners fled from jails across the country during the protests.
