KATHMANDU: The Government of Japan has decided to provide grant assistance of 2.8 billion yen, equivalent to Rs 2.6 billion, for the 'Emergency Rehabilitation of Sindhuli Road Affected by Floods'.

A signing ceremony was held today in the presence of Minister for Finance Rameshore Prasad Khanal and Minister for Home Affairs Om Prakash Aryal. Ambassador of Japan to Nepal, Maeda Toru, and Secretary of the Ministry of Finance Ghanshyam Upadhyaya signed the exchange of notes for the grant, according to a press release issued by the Embassy of Japan.

The road was damaged by floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rain in September 2024. More than 10 kilometres of the road were washed away, and the damage has had a severe impact on the local economy and people’s lives as well as on the national economy, including trade and transportation.

The Sindhuli Road is 160 km long and links the mid and eastern Tarai with the capital, Kathmandu. Its construction was supported by Japanese grant assistance of 25.8 billion yen between 1995 and 2015, and the road has contributed to Nepal’s economic growth.

The Japanese government is supporting the road’s restoration and recovery through the grant. The road will continue to serve as an essential route and as a symbol of friendship between Japan and Nepal.

The Embassy of Japan said the project will be instrumental for Nepal in achieving sustainable economic development and in further deepening the cordial relationship between the two countries.
