KATHMANDU: Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed its disagreement with certain provisions in the Printing and Publication (Second Amendment) Regulations, 2082. In a statement issued today, the FNJ said some provisions of the regulations appear to be contrary to a free press.
The FNJ said the regulations contain restrictive measures, including imposing fees on those who have previously received free registration and renewal, and that monitoring and inspection would be carried out by local authorities. It added that there are impractical requirements, such as the need to publish a notice in three national daily newspapers to cancel the certificate of registered online media, and discriminatory provisions whereby registered newspapers under the same Act do not need to renew but online media must renew every year.
The umbrella organisation of journalists has also strongly urged the government to rectify immediately the provisions it regards as being against an independent press.
