Govt extends deadline by 30 days for Gen-Z protest damage assessment committee

KATHMANDU: The government has extended the deadline for the committee formed to assess the loss and damage caused to the public and private sectors during the Gen Z protests of September 8 and 9. The committee has been given a further 30 days.

Announcing the decisions of the Council of Ministers on December 1, Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharel said the government has decided to provide identity cards with a photograph to the families of martyrs of the Gen Z protest. The Home Ministry will issue the identity card to the martyrs' mother, father, husband, wife, unmarried son and unmarried daughter, he said.

The government has also decided to observe Gen Z Martyr Day on Bhadra 23 each year.

The Cabinet has decided to appoint Bhupal Baral, Revenue Secretary at the Finance Ministry, as chairman of the Board of Directors of the Employees' Provident Fund, Minister Kharel said.

The government has set a limit for cash transactions, deciding that a single transaction of over Rs 500,000 for the purchase of goods and services must be carried out through a financial institution or banking channel. This decision will come into effect on January 15, 2026.

The government has approved the participation of a Nepali delegation, led by Joint Secretary Shivaram Pokhrel, in the fifth meeting of the Nepal‑India Joint Working Group on Oil and Gas Cooperation, to be held in New Delhi on December 8.

The Cabinet has decided to amend Annexe-1 of the Act Related to the Remuneration, Facilities and Conditions Other Services of the Chief Justice and the Justices of the Supreme Court, 2074 BS, and Annexe-1 of the Act Related to the Remuneration, Facilities and Conditions Other Services of the Judges of the High Court and the District Court, 2074 BS.

The Council of Ministers has approved the Nepal Special Service (20th Amendment) Regulations, 2082 BS.

The government has decided to provide $200,000 to the Sri Lankan government as assistance on behalf of the Government of Nepal in response to the massive loss of life and property caused by floods and landslides triggered by heavy rains.

The government has granted approval for the Minister for Health and Population to participate in the Second WHO Global Summit on Traditional Medicine and the WHO Global Strategy 2025–2034, being organised in New Delhi from December 17 to 19.

The Cabinet has appointed Prof Gyan Bahadur Thapa of Gulmi to the vacant post of Secretary of the University Grants Commission, nominated Er Dipak Shrestha of Gorkha as Member‑Secretary of the Lumbini Development Trust, and nominated Dr Kumar Sharma Acharya of Dang as chairman of the Press Council Nepal.

The Cabinet has also approved the Carbon Trade Regulations, 2025.
