BIRATNAGAR: Customs agents have launched a protest objecting to the provisions of the Act to Amend and Consolidate Laws Relating to Customs, 2082, issued by the government on December 6. As a result of the protest, the Biratnagar Customs Office has come to a standstill from today.

Devkinandan Sharma, President of Biratnagar Customs Agents Association, said work at the office had been halted with effect from Tuesday at the call of the Federation of Customs Agents Nepal. Customs clearance for imports and exports has been suspended because of the protest.

The private sector in Biratnagar has expressed support for the movement. Pawan Sarada, President of Confederation of Nepalese Industries, Koshi Province Committee, and a member of the Constituent Assembly, said he supported opposition to the new Customs Act introduced by the government, which he said is aimed at taking action against industrialists, businesspeople and customs agents.

The Biratnagar Customs Office has a government‑set target to collect more than Rs 140 million a day, and the achievement of that target has been affected by the action.
