KATHMANDU: Nepal's outstanding public debt has exceeded Rs 2,800 billion, according to the Public Debt Management Office (PDMO).
At the beginning of the current fiscal year 2025/26, on July 17, total public debt stood at Rs 2,674.04 billion. It increased by Rs 132.34 billion by the end of Poush, on January 14, 2026, reaching Rs 2,806.38 billion.
Of the total public debt, Rs 1,319.13 billion (47.01%) is internal debt and Rs 1,408.26 billion (53%) is external debt, the office said. The total outstanding public debt remaining to be settled stands at 45.95% of gross domestic product (GDP).
The government has set a target of raising public debt of Rs 595 billion for current fiscal year. By the mid‑term review of the budget, Rs 214.55 billion has already been received, which stands at 36.02% of the annual target.
