MoFE releases 'Living Sagarmatha' mountain resilience strategy

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Forests and Environment has released the 'Living Sagarmatha: Nepal Mountain Resilience Strategy' today. The Ministry had prepared the strategy in collaboration with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Ministry Secretary Govinda Prasad Sharma said it was expected that the strategy would help uplift the living standards of communities in mountainous regions and ensure the long-term protection of natural resources.

The strategy has incorporated as its main priorities mitigating the impacts of climate change, conservation of mountainous biodiversity, sustainable forest management, protection of water resources and the livelihoods of local communities.

It gives special importance to creating economic opportunities through mountain agriculture, herb production, promotion of tourism, renewable energy and the development of value chains for local products.

The strategy aims to enhance economic productivity alongside environmental conservation by prioritising the sustainable development of the Himalayan and other mountainous regions.
