GANDAKI: More than 2,000 local people have opted for beekeeping in the Pokhara Metropolitan City area, making it a lucrative business, officials said.
Manahar Kadariya, chief of the Agricultural Development Section in Pokhara Metropolitan City, said public interest in beekeeping is on the rise and there is a good market for locally produced honey.
People in the rural areas of the metropolis, mostly in wards 16, 18, 20, 23, 26, 28, 30 and 33, are engaged in beekeeping and produce almost 90 tonnes of honey a year, Kadariya said.
“Demand for honey is rising in the market. Beekeeping could become a good option for income generation given the high potential for honey production in this area,” he said, adding that beekeeping contributes to other farming activities.
The metropolis said it has offered various technical and vocational training programmes for beekeepers.
