PM Karki pays tribute to martyrs on Martyrs' Day

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki visited the Martyrs Memorial at Lainchaur and paid tribute to the known and unknown martyrs today, on the last day of Martyrs' Week. The government has declared today a public holiday on the occasion of Martyrs' Day.

A special tribute ceremony was held at Shahid Uddyan, Lainchaur, as the week-long programme commemorating the martyrs drew to a close. A morning procession was organised from Shanti Batika on Martyrs' Day; it comprised the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force bands, a march-past and a carriage bearing portraits of the martyrs. The procession reached Martyrs Park in Lainchaur and was followed by a commemoration ceremony.

On the occasion, Prime Minister Karki paid homage to the brave individuals who sacrificed their lives in various movements throughout history for democracy, the nation and freedom on behalf of the people.

The meeting was attended by Prime Minister Karki, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal, ministers, senior government officials, people's representatives and chiefs of security agencies.

Addressing the function, Acting Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City Sunita Dangol said that efforts and sacrifices made in the past for civil liberties, human rights, good governance and dignity should not be forgotten.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City has been marking a week-long programme starting from the 10th of Magh every year.
