Kathmandu: Authorities have intensified market surveillance amid a sharp rise in complaints of black marketing and irregularities in the sale of food and beverages as election preparations gather momentum.

The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumers’ Protection carried out inspections across the capital, targeting businesses accused of overpricing and failing to meet regulatory standards.

During the monitoring drive, JS General Store was fined Rs 10,000 for non-compliance with required standards. The penalty was imposed under the Consumer Protection Act.

In total, 20 firms were inspected in a single day. Nine were formally directed to improve their services and uphold consumer rights.

The Department stated that inspections were conducted in coordination with local representatives, consumer rights advocates and other stakeholders, warning that monitoring will continue throughout the election period to curb unfair trade practices.
